This is where failover comes in.

In a basic setup, the router normally uses your primary connection and keeps Starlink as a secondary link. If Internet connectivity through the primary link is lost, the router switches automatically to Starlink.

Checking whether the WAN port is still physically connected is not enough. The router should periodically verify that it can actually reach the Internet through a reliable external destination.

Suitable models from MikroTik, Teltonika, Ubiquiti, and other advanced router vendors can support this type of configuration. Some models can also use several connections at the same time through load balancing, which is different from failover alone.

Recovery time depends on how the checks are configured. Detection that is too slow can leave the network offline for several minutes, while overly aggressive checks can trigger unnecessary switching during brief fluctuations.

For homes, small offices, or remote installations, combining fiber, cable, or LTE/5G with Starlink can provide a robust backup solution.

In future Ciberpioneros guides, we will look at specific configurations for different routers and use cases.

Combining your primary connection with Starlink can help keep your network online during an outage.
